Heat Pump
Heat pumps are highly efficient heating and cooling systems that offer significant energy cost savings. This proven and reliable technology has been in use in Canada for several decades. Thanks to Government Grants, Ontarians can now access this expensive but efficient green technology at a more affordable cost.
So, what is a heat pump? A heat pump is part of a home heating and cooling system that is installed outside of our home. It can cool the home like a regular air conditioner and it can also provide heat with an efficiency of up to 500%. In both heating and cooling applications, it offers significant energy savings.
How does it work? An air heat pump is an advanced and versatile cooling/heating system that efficiently extracts heat from the cold outside air and transfers it inside the home. The compressor inside the heat pump consumes minimal electricity to increase the temperature of the extracted heat, and the energy provided by the outside air is essentially FREE. Consumers only pay for the electricity used by the compressor, which is, on average, 2-4 times less than the heat delivered into the house. The heat pump can also provide efficient cooling by transferring warm home indoor air to the outside.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a conventional HVAC system? What is the annual saving with a heat pump installed? Compared to conventional furnaces and boilers, which provide space heating by burning fuel like natural gas, heat pumps are much more efficient, operating on a different principle. New furnaces or boilers usually have an efficiency rating that does not exceed 95%. In contrast, heat pumps use minimal electricity input to transfer thermal energy between outdoor and indoor units. In some cases, heat pumps can provide more than four times the heating energy output for the same energy consumption compared to furnaces and boilers. For example at 8°C, the coefficient of performance (COP) of air-source heat pumps typically ranges from between 3.0 and 5.0 or 300% and 500% efficiency accordingly. It is important to mention that Carrier Central Heat Pumps we install is a combination of a heat pump and an ultra-high-efficiency gas furnace. This combination allows our heat pump customers to heat their homes using dual fuel: gas and hydro. After installation is completed we assist our customers in setting up the system in a way that provides the most savings and reliability of the system in the long run.
Heat pumps are also 50%-200% more efficient than conventional air conditioners when used in cooling mode. The most energy-efficient heat pumps can save up to $900 annually on gas and hydro for an average-sized house in Ontario.
How to get $7100 in Government Rebates and what is the process/timing? To help Ontarians convert their conventional HVAC systems into the most energy-efficient heat pumps, Enbridge Gas with Canada’s Greener Homes Grant launched the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) program as of January 2023. The program offers Ontarians access to $6500+600 in rebates. Contact us for information about how to obtain $7100 in government rebates.
How much do they cost? The cost of a heat pump can range from $4000 (1 head ductless heat pump installed) up to $12500 for a 96.5% AFUE gas furnace and central heat pump system that can be safely used year-round for heating and cooling needs in a 2000sq house. Our rental programs allow customers to get heat pumps installed with no initial cost and get all Government Rebates. Please contact us for more information of how to get the most advanced Heat Pumps.
How long do they last? A good unit that is properly installed and serviced should last 15 years, and most heat pumps come with a 10-year parts warranty from the manufacturer. Ten-year labor warranty programs are available for an additional cost. We offer rental and rent-to-own programs for heat pumps that guarantee free repair service for the lifetime of the equipment.
